The GIS/Data Management Section is responsible for GIS-related database management, GIS queries and map output, Division database creation and administration, GPS-related activities and post processing, and general IT solutions.
Geographic Information System (GIS) is a process through which digital maps and databases are linked, is used to assist in the preparation of environmental assessments that include analysis of wetlands, archeological evidence, wildlife biology, hazardous wastes, noise and environmental justice issues. Additional responsibilities include the acquisition, development and application of Global Positioning System (GPS) hardware, methods and techniques for more accurate and timely location of project centerlines, dimensions, constraints and field plots. When combined, GIS and GPS enhance accuracy, efficiency and time management during data collection and subsequent analysis of environmental constraints, enabling the ARDOT to more effectively maintain compliance with Federal environmental impact regulations.
