Blessing Ceremony Native American Consultation

The ARDOT, in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration, has been working closely with American Indian Groups to insure that they have input on highway projects that might affect their ancestral homelands.  Tribes native to Arkansas include the Quapaw, the Caddo, the Osage, and the Tunica.  Other tribes, (Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Shawnee, Delaware, and Kickapoo) whose ancestral homelands were located farther to the east, were also known to have briefly occupied parts of the State during the 19th century.  Depending on the needs of the various tribes and the complexity of the project involved, consultation can range from simple phone conversations to on-site field trips and often result in the development of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) tailored to address the concerns of the tribes.
